On Monday, Nov. 7, the City of Lawrence will begin construction to improve Queens Road to meet City street standards. The City anticipates completing the project in September 2023, pending weather and other project-related delays.
The project seeks to improve Queens Road from 6th St. to Eisenhower Dr. and is part of the City’s Complete Streets policy. It will be a paved, two-lane street (one lane northbound and one lane southbound) with a raised median/center turn lane for intersecting streets.
The project will include on-street bike lanes, a shared-use path on the west side of Queens and a sidewalk on the east side of Queens. A traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of 6th St. & Queens Road, and a roundabout will be installed at Queens Road and Overland Dr. A new waterline, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and landscaping are all included in the project.
During the ongoing construction, Queens Road will be closed from 6th St. to Eisenhower Dr. Only those who live on Queens Road will be able to access it. Eastbound and westbound traffic on Rock Chalk Dr. and Wakarusa Dr. will be maintained through their intersection with Queens Road. Eastbound and westbound traffic on Overland Dr. will not be able to cross Queens Road. Traffic control and signed detours will be provided.
