University of Kansas recently issued the following announcement.
LAWRENCE — Reported crimes are down on the University of Kansas Lawrence campus, according to statistics released today by the KU Office of Public Safety.
KU Public Safety took reports of 483 criminal offenses on campus in calendar year 2019, which is a 22% decrease from 2018 and the lowest number reported in the past 10 years.
Property crimes, such as theft and vandalism, continue to make up the greatest number of offenses reported on campus, but both were down when compared to previous years. Violent crimes — such as rape, aggravated battery and robbery — were also reported, but they were a small percentage of the total.
Chief of Police Chris Keary credits the university and those on campus with helping his staff reduce crime on campus.
“The university continues to invest in security technology like cameras and card access systems to improve the security of buildings and lessen opportunities for crime,” Keary said. “But it is particularly gratifying to see our community members doing their part by reporting all crimes that occur, reporting any unusual or suspicious activity, and following our social media.”
KU Public Safety uses various social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, to provide tips to the community and to ask for their assistance.
Keary also praised the efforts of community partners to bring awareness of sexual assaults on campus.
A complete listing of all criminal offenses reported to the KU Public Office from 2010-2019 is available online.
