Kansas baseball will continue its early season schedule with a game against Lamar University on Wednesday, February 18, at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont, Texas. The first pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. CT.
The Jayhawks come into the matchup with a 2-1 record after winning their opening series against UTRGV. Kansas dropped the first game but responded with a 10-3 win on Saturday and an 8-7 victory on Sunday. Head coach Dan Fitzgerald reached his 100th win as Kansas head coach during the series.
“We had a great series win against a really tough UTRGV team,” said Fitzgerald. “I’m proud of how the guys competed. Playing great competition is important as we continue to get ready for Big 12 play. Lamar has a really good team and another great environment. We are looking forward to Wednesday night.”
The Jayhawks’ bullpen was effective in Sunday’s game, allowing only three runs over seven innings and recording 12 strikeouts from Carter Fink, Riane Ritter, Boede Rahe, Toby Scheidt and Caleb Deer. As a staff, Kansas averaged over 12 strikeouts per game during the opening weekend.
This season’s roster includes 36 student-athletes—26 newcomers and ten returners—with eighteen making their Kansas debut last weekend. The group consists of 22 pitchers and 14 position players; most are transfers along with seven high school recruits.
Lamar also holds a 2-1 record after winning its home series against Oakland University on opening weekend. The Cardinals’ pitching staff posted an ERA of 3.54 and averaged nearly fourteen strikeouts per game.
Wednesday’s contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Fans can listen via the Jayhawk Sports Network or follow live statistics online and updates through @KUBaseball on X (formerly Twitter).
Graduate transfer Jordan Bach made an immediate impact for Kansas by hitting a leadoff home run in his first at-bat of the season. Bach finished the weekend batting .583 with seven hits—including four-hit and three-hit games—a double, home run, three RBIs, five runs scored and two walks.
Junior pitcher Mathis Nayral started Saturday’s game for Kansas and delivered seven innings while allowing just one run on two hits without issuing any walks.
Kansas and Lamar have met once before in baseball—in February 2004—when Lamar won by scoring two runs in the seventh inning to secure a comeback victory.
After facing Lamar, Kansas will conclude its road trip with a weekend series at McNeese State starting Friday, February 20.
